There are two main types of attributes: global attributes and product-specific attributes. Global attributes are created once and can be applied across multiple products, while product-specific attributes are unique to a single product.
Let's say you have a clothing store that sells tops, pants, socks, and shoes. A common attribute for these products would be the Size and Colour. Instead of creating specific size or colour attributes for each new product, it’s best to set-up global attributes first as it saves time, keep things organized and it can be used for various products.
How To Create Global Product Attributes
- Go to Products and click on Attributes.

- In the "Add new attribute" section, enter the name of the attribute (e.g., "Colour", "Size"). In this example, I will be creating a colour attribute.

- Optional: Add a Slug: You can optionally enter a slug, which is the URL-friendly version of the attribute name. If you leave it blank, one will be automatically be created for you.
- Select a default sort order, the way in which you would like them to appear in the product listing, example, alphabetically by name, numerically, etc...).

- When done, click on the "Add Attribute" button.
- Now you will have to configure terms. After adding the attribute, you'll see it listed on the right side. Click "Configure terms" to add the specific values for that attribute (e.g., "Black," "White", "Blue", etc...).

- If you would like to add additional Global Attributes such as Size, Material, etc..., simply repeat the steps above.
